It is estimated that India has only 1.9 million hospital beds and 95,000 ICU beds. What’s worse, most of the beds are concentrated in the private sector, with substantial variation in available resources across states. While this presented a healthcare problem even before the Covid-19 pandemic, it has become even more critical in 2020. Experts believe that India requires almost 3 times the current number of ICU beds to avoid preventable deaths. In addition, ICU beds are neither accessible nor affordable for a vast majority of patients.
An alumnus of IIT Bombay, Mudit was actively involved in designing racecars before starting Dozee. Dozee monitors the micro vibrations in your body, the inspiration for this came from their automobile days, where they used vibration sensors to check the health of cars. Mudit was working in an automobile company in Germany, when he came up with this idea. “I was away from home and my parents’ health was always at the back of my mind.” On his 24th birthday, he decided to take action. “I resigned and came to India to manufacture a health monitor.” He roped in Gaurav Parchani (co-founder) and Pritish Gupta (COO). Even though we spend most of our time at home, there are no high quality healthcare devices there. The Dozee team thinks of sleep as an ‘8 hour continuous health check-up time.’
Dozee is continuous, contact-free vitals monitor with remote monitoring capabilities and alert system that converts any bed into a step-down ICU in less than 2 minutes. Priced at Rs. 7,999, it is about 1/10th the cost of conventional alternatives. Kept under the mattress, Dozee monitors patients’ heart rate, respiration rate, heart rate variability, oxygen saturation levels, blood pressure and activity levels through technology based on Ballistocardiography (BCG). The device also lets clinicians set thresholds to trigger alerts for body vitals.
The device has medical-grade accuracy of 98.4% – as accurate as ECG, 2D Doppler Echo, RIP Bands. The data is uploaded on cloud to give remote access, so that the clinicians can access the data from a safe distance. This data is further analysed using advanced machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms to create health data of the user. Setting up Dozee requires minimal technical expertise and it can be used in home settings. It can help reduce the workload of healthcare staff by almost 50% and provide proactive care.
Partnering with WISH Foundation and Tamil Nadu Govt., Dozee was able to aide continuous health monitoring in PHC in Barah, Covid care wards in 7 districts in Tamil Nadu. In Covid times, thousands of beds were enabled with health monitoring, helping patients across seven states in India.
